George Orwell: The Man Behind 1984


The brain behind 1984 was born on 13 June 1903 in Bihar, India.  Unlike many believe, his name is not George Orwell, in fact, it is Eric Blair. 
After moving to England, at age seven he was enrolled at St. Cyprian's School where he finished his education. He earned a scholarship to Eton College where he was a King’s Scholar for four years.
After the Spanish Civil War began Orwell volunteered as an infantryman for the Workers' Party of Marxist Unification until he was shot in the neck. 
After the war Orwell began writing for the New English Weekly, the moved on to work for BBC Eastern Service, before finally becoming editor at the Tribune.
In 1944 his first book, Animal Farm, was published with great success.  This motivated him to write 1984, which was published In 1949. 
Orwell was married twice before his death of Tuberculosis in 1950. He was 46 years old.
